To Those Wishing to Go to War, here are five Bible Verses about
War Between Christians and Muslims.
In Response To:
NY Times – US Politics Christianity And The Military
LA Times – Christian Rhetoric and US War With Iran
Matthew 5:9 (ASV) – Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.
This verse emphasizes that those who actively pursue peace reflect God’s character. In the context of religious conflict, it reminds believers that true righteousness is not found in violence or conquest, but in reconciliation and harmony. It challenges any justification of war that claims divine approval.
John 18:36 (ASV) – Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Here, Jesus clearly separates His mission from earthly warfare. He teaches that His followers are not to engage in physical battles to defend faith. This verse directly questions the idea that military actions can be divinely mandated in the name of Christianity.
Romans 12:19 (ASV) – Avenge not yourselves, beloved, but give place unto wrath of God: for it is written, Vengeance belongeth unto me; I will recompense, saith the Lord.
This passage reminds believers that justice belongs to God alone. It discourages retaliation and violence, encouraging trust in divine justice instead of human warfare. It is especially relevant when leaders attempt to justify military aggression as righteous.
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 (ASV) – For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh (for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds);
Paul clarifies that the Christian struggle is spiritual, not physical. The “weapons” of believers are not military tools, but spiritual virtues such as truth, faith, and love. This directly opposes the idea that Christianity supports physical war as a divine mission.
James 4:1 (ASV) – Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members?
James identifies the root of conflict as human desires and internal struggles, not divine command. This verse exposes how wars often arise from pride, ambition, and self-interest rather than God’s will.
Bible Principles Based on the Five Verses
True followers of God seek peace and reconciliation rather than conflict (Matthew 5:9).
Christ’s kingdom is spiritual and not advanced through physical warfare (John 18:36).
Believers must trust God with justice instead of taking vengeance into their own hands (Romans 12:19).
The Christian battle is spiritual, fought with faith and truth, not weapons (2 Corinthians 10:3-4).
Human conflict often stems from selfish desires rather than divine purpose (James 4:1).
Life Applications
When Claims of Divine Violence Meet Christlike Mercy
In daily life, these principles call us to examine our attitudes toward conflict, authority, and justice. Rather than accepting claims that violence can be divinely justified, we are encouraged to measure such claims against the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. This means promoting peace in our communities, resisting hatred, and refusing to support actions that contradict God’s character of love and mercy.
Cultivating Humility and Discernment in Living Out God’s Will
Applying these teachings also requires humility and discernment. We must recognize how easily human ambition can be mistaken for divine purpose. By focusing on spiritual growth, prayer, and love for others, even those of different beliefs, we align ourselves with God’s will and become instruments of peace in a divided world.
Prayer for those wishing to go to war
Prayer for Peace and Discernment
Jehovah, the God of peace and truth, we come before You seeking wisdom and understanding. We ask that You guide those wishing to go to war, that they may see clearly the difference between human ambition and Your divine will. Help them to remember that blessed are the peacemakers, and to desire peace above conflict.
Prayer for Discernment About Invoking God to Justify Military Power
Father, grant discernment regarding the issue of Christ’s followers and world leaders, invoking divine purpose to justify military might. Let not human authority overshadow Your Word. Teach them that Your kingdom is not of this world, and that Your servants are not called to fight with earthly weapons in Your name.
Prayer for Clarity and Peace Amid Claims of Divinely Justified War
Lord, we pray for clarity for those who face the belief that military actions are divinely sanctioned. Remove confusion and reveal truth through Your Spirit. Help them understand that vengeance belongs to You, and that the weapons of our warfare are spiritual, rooted in righteousness and love.
Prayer for Humility, Peace, and Reconciliation
Jehovah, fill their hearts with humility and self-examination, that they may recognize the true source of conflict within human desires. Lead them away from pride and toward peace. May they walk in Your wisdom and become instruments of reconciliation in a world filled with division.
In Jesus’ Name We Pray, Amen.
